Latest Defence News (January and February, 2021)

1. India’s first indigenous machine pistol 'ASMI' developed jointly by DRDO and Indian Army would replace the present 9mm pistols in the defence forces under, 'Make in India', programme. The machine pistol can fire at a range of 100 metres. 
2. The Cabinet Committee on Security has cleared a deal worth nearly Rs 48,000 crore for the acquisition of 83 Tejas Light Combat Aircrafts for the Indian Air Force. Tejas Mk-1A multirole light fighters will be manufactured by state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. 
3. A major-rank Indian Army officer has indigenously developed the world’s first universal bulletproof jacket 'Shakti' which can be used by both male and female combatants. The jacket is also the world’s first flexible body armour.
4. Thales, a French Multinational Company has signed an agreement with the Bharat Dynamics Limited, a Government of India enterprise to jointly work on STARStreak Air Defence System. The minimum range of the system is 0.3 km and the maximum range is 7 km. 
5. Recently on Army Day the Indian Army displayed its combat drones that are part of the Swarm Technology. The drones are lightweight drones that carry multiple packages to a single destination at a time. An offensive swarm drone system simulates taking down a range of targets, ranging from tanks, terror camps, helipads and fuel dumps.
6. The surface to air missile program achieved a major Milestone when the first test of Akash-NG (next-generation) was successfully conducted from coast of Odisha.
7. India is about to sign a multi-billion dollar contract with Russia to supply around 500 T-14 'Armata' tanks. The T-14 'Armata' tanks can withstand a direct hit from a large caliber and a UAV strike. 
8. The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has approved the acquisition of 118 Arjun Mark 1A tanks on February 23, 2021.The approval was given for the Indian Army at a cost of Rs.6,000 crores.
